Claude: one model family, many surfaces, several accounts

Claude is Anthropic's family of AI models. You use them in the Claude apps, in agent products such as Claude Code and Cowork, through the API, or through Amazon, Google Cloud and Microsoft.

Anthropic sorts the family by the surface you open it in: the chat apps on web, desktop and mobile, Claude Code in the terminal and the IDE, Cowork in the desktop app, and Claude inside Chrome, Microsoft 365 and Slack. Every surface runs Claude models only. Your plan decides which models you get. In Claude Code you switch with /model, and admins can limit the choice.

Which model runs is one question. Whose account serves it is another. You can use Anthropic's own service through a Claude plan or the Anthropic Console. You can also run the same models through your own Amazon Bedrock, Claude Platform on AWS, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry account, or through a gateway you run yourself. The route decides the contract, the region and the bill.

Claude apps[2]

Web, desktop, mobile
Chat assistant at claude.ai, as a desktop app for macOS and Windows (Linux in beta), and as a mobile app for iOS and Android.

Claude Code[3]

Terminal, IDE, desktop, web
An agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and connects to your development tools.

Claude Cowork[4]

Desktop; web and mobile in beta
An agent that works across your files and connected tools to finish multi-step tasks, including scheduled tasks.

Claude Design[5]

Web
Creates designs, prototypes, slides and microsites through conversation. In beta.

Claude in Chrome[6]

Browser extension
A browser extension that lets Claude read, click and navigate websites with you. Google Chrome only.

Claude for Microsoft 365[7]

Office add-ins
Claude inside Excel, PowerPoint and Word (generally available) and Outlook (beta), on all paid plans.

Claude Tag[8]

Slack
A shared Claude agent that you @mention in Slack channels. It replaced the earlier Claude in Slack app and is in beta for Team and Enterprise.

Claude Science[9]

Desktop
A workbench for scientific research: analysis, database search and figures. In beta on paid plans.

Claude Agent SDK[10]

SDK
A Python and TypeScript library with Claude Code's tools and agent loop, for agents you run yourself.

Claude Managed Agents[11]

API
An agent harness that Anthropic hosts and you configure through the Claude API. In beta.

Claude Developer Platform[12]

API, Console
The Claude API and Console for building your own applications, billed per token.

Plans

As of September 2026 there are three plans for individuals, two for organisations, and the API.

Free[13]Individuals who want to try Claude.Sonnet and Haiku models, chat, web search, memory and connectors. Consumer terms, no admin console.
Pro[13]Individuals for everyday work.Adds Opus, Claude Code, Cowork, Claude Design, Claude in Chrome, Microsoft 365 and Projects. Fable only with usage credits. Consumer terms.
Max[14]Individuals who work with Claude all day.Everything in Pro with more usage (5x or 20x) and up to half of the weekly limit on Fable models. Consumer terms.
Team[15]Teams of 2 to 150 seats, with standard and premium seats.Commercial terms, no training on your data by default. SSO, domain capture, central billing, spend limits, connector and skills controls.
Enterprise[16]Larger organisations, self-serve or through sales.Adds SCIM, audit logs, Compliance API, custom data retention, detailed roles, IP allowlisting, customer-managed encryption keys and a US-only inference option.
Claude API[17]Developers and companies that build on the models.Commercial terms, billed per token. Zero data retention is available by agreement, but not for Fable and Mythos models.

Which model runs

Every surface runs Claude models only. Your plan decides which models you can use. In Claude Code you switch with /model and admins can restrict the list. On a cloud provider you pin the exact model version yourself.

Claude Opus 5.5[18]Released 22 Sep 2026. Anthropic's recommended starting point and the default in Claude Code.
Claude Fable 5.1[19]For the hardest reasoning and long agentic work. Paid plans, fully included only on Max and premium seats.
Claude Sonnet 5[20]Fast mid-range model.
Claude Haiku 4.5[20]Fastest and smallest model.
Claude Mythos 5.1[12]Same model as Fable 5.1 with lighter safeguards. Only for vetted organisations.

What you can configure

Sign-in and provisioning[15]Team has SSO, domain capture and just-in-time provisioning. Enterprise adds SCIM.
Roles and permissions[13]Enterprise offers detailed role-based permissions and custom roles, for example to decide who may use Claude Design.
Audit logs and Compliance API[12]Enterprise has audit logs and a Compliance API for activity, chats and files. Since August and September 2026 it also covers Cowork, Claude Code, Chrome and Microsoft 365 sessions.
Data retention[21]Enterprise Owners set a custom retention period for chats and projects, with 30 days as the minimum. It does not cover Claude Design, Claude Tag or Managed Agents.
Connectors (MCP)[22]Team and Enterprise admins assign MCP connectors per role through the identity provider (Okta first) and can block personal accounts.
Skills[23]Team and Enterprise Owners provide skills to the whole organisation and can switch off skills that users create themselves.
Memory and Projects[24]On Team and Enterprise, memory is off until an Owner turns it on. Turning it off again deletes all memory entries. Each project keeps its own memory.
Cowork and Claude in Chrome[25]Cowork is on by default and Owners can switch it off, along with cloud sessions and automatic approval. For Chrome, admins set allowlists and blocklists of websites.
Claude Code managed settings[26]Rules that users cannot override, such as permissions, allowed models and MCP servers. Delivered from the admin console (Team, Enterprise) or through MDM, the registry or a file.
Claude Tag in Slack[8]Owners decide who may use it, set spend limits per organisation and channel, and control tool access and guests.

What happens to your data

Consumer plans (Free, Pro, Max)[27]Since the 2025 change, you decide whether your chats are used for training, and you can change this under Settings > Privacy. If it is on, data may be kept de-identified for up to 5 years. Incognito chats are never used.
Business plans and API[28]The Commercial Terms say: "Anthropic may not train models on Customer Content from Services." Feedback you send (thumbs up or down) is an exception.
Retention[29]API inputs and outputs are deleted within 30 days by default. Deleted chats leave the backend within 30 days. Content flagged for policy violations can be kept for up to 2 years.

Europe: GDPR, data residency and the AI Act

DPA and GDPR terms[30]Anthropic's Data Processing Addendum, with Standard Contractual Clauses, is part of the Commercial Terms for Team, Enterprise and the API. Free, Pro and Max are not covered.
Data residency with Anthropic[31]Anthropic's own service has no EU region. Processing is "global" or "us", and Anthropic says "Data is stored in the US."
EU processing through cloud providers[32]In-region EU processing is documented for Amazon Bedrock (EU inference profile or a regional endpoint) and Google Cloud ("eu" multi-region or regional endpoints). Microsoft Foundry documents no EU option.
AI Act[33]Anthropic announced on 21 Jul 2025 that it would sign the EU General-Purpose AI Code of Practice. The European Commission lists Anthropic as a signatory.

Hybrid: the same models in your own account

The same Claude models also run in your own cloud account, with your cloud identity, billing and, on some routes, your region. What stays in the region depends on who operates the model.

Amazon Bedrock[32]AWS operates the infrastructure and Anthropic has no access to it. Choose a regional endpoint or an EU inference profile to keep processing in the EU. AWS terms apply.
Claude Platform on AWS[34]Anthropic operates the service, with AWS sign-in and billing. Your workspace's AWS region does not decide where the model runs. Only "global" or "us" is available.
Google Cloud (Agent Platform, formerly Vertex AI)[35]Runs in your Google Cloud project. Global, "eu" or "us" multi-region, or single-region endpoints.
Microsoft Foundry[36]Anthropic operates the models and acts as an independent processor for Microsoft. The options are Global Standard or US Data Zone Standard. No EU option is documented.
Claude Code with a cloud provider or gateway[37]The terminal, VS Code and JetBrains can use any of the four routes above or your own gateway. Anthropic does not support routing Claude Code to non-Claude models. On cloud routes the newest models can arrive later, so pin versions.
Claude Desktop on your own provider[38]Chat, Cowork and Code in the desktop app, with inference through Bedrock, Google Cloud, Foundry or a gateway. Chat history stays on the user's device.
Claude for Microsoft 365 via cloud[7]The Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook add-ins also work with Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry.
Local models[39]Anthropic documents no local or on-premises Claude model. You can host a gateway or agent sandbox yourself, but not the model.

Recently changed
  • Claude Opus 5.5 is the new default in Claude Code; Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 follow in the coming weeks (22 Sep 2026).
  • New Claude Platform on AWS workspaces now run on AWS infrastructure; older ones may still be processed outside AWS (18 Sep 2026).
  • Claude in Chrome turns on by default for Enterprise organisations unless an admin has already switched it off (10 Sep 2026).
