Google Gemini: one model family, from Gmail to your own cloud project

Gemini is Google's model family and the products built on it: a chat app, AI inside Google Workspace, a research notebook, coding agents and an enterprise platform on Google Cloud.

Google sorts its developer tools by how much you supervise them. With Jules you delegate: you write the task and leave. In Antigravity you supervise: the agent works while you watch and redirect. In AI Studio you collaborate, back and forth. For office work the product is the Gemini app, Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Meet, and Gemini Notebook for research on your own sources.

Which model runs is mostly Google's choice: Google models, with a dropdown whose options depend on your plan. Whose account serves it is the second question. A personal Google Account, a Google Workspace tenant, or your own Google Cloud project, where you pick the model ID, the region and the identity yourself. As of September 2026 the Flash line (Gemini 3.8 Flash) is the newest generally available model, and Gemini 3.1 Pro is still in preview.

Which model runs

In the Gemini app and Workspace, Google picks the default and your plan decides what the dropdown offers. In Gemini Enterprise, admins choose which models users may pick. On Agent Platform you pin the exact model ID yourself.

What you can configure

Gemini app on or off[24]Workspace admins switch the Gemini app on or off per organisational unit or group. By default only users over 18 with a qualifying licence get it.
Gemini per Workspace app[3]Separate on/off switches for Gmail, Drive, Docs, Meet, Chat, Vids and other services, per organisational unit or group.
Access to other apps[25]Admins decide whether the Gemini app may use Workspace apps, Classroom, and other Google apps such as Maps and YouTube. These are on by default.
Third-party connectors (MCP)[26]Gemini in Workspace connects to Asana, Atlassian Rovo, HubSpot, Salesforce and others through MCP. On by default, admins control it per domain, organisational unit or group.
Conversation history[27]Admins set auto-delete after about 3 months, 18 months, 3 years or never, or let users choose, and decide whether users may delete chats.
Vault[28]Admins can retain, hold, search and export Gemini app conversations with Google Vault.
Custom instructions[29]Users set a lasting style and tone for Gemini in Drive, Chat, Gmail, Sheets and Slides. Google states: "There is no admin control for this feature."
Gemini Enterprise admin[30]Admins choose the models users can use, allow chat agents and agent sharing with or without approval, and control Drive and OneDrive uploads.
Antigravity extensions[31]MCP servers, skills, rules, custom subagents, hooks and permissions. Teams can sign in through a Google Cloud project or a Gemini Enterprise licence.
Code customisation[9]Gemini Code Assist Enterprise can use your private repositories for tailored suggestions.

What happens to your data

Personal Google Accounts (Gemini app)[32]Keep Activity is on by default for users 18 and over, and Google then uses chats to improve its services, "including training generative AI models". Human reviewers read some chats. If you switch it off, future chats are not used for training and are kept for 72 hours. Otherwise chats are deleted after 18 months by default, or after 3 or 36 months if you choose.
Gemini Notebook (personal)[33]Content is "not used to directly train our foundational AI models, unless you choose to provide feedback". For Workspace accounts, nothing is human reviewed or used for training.
Google Workspace[34]"Workspace does not use customer data for training models without customer's prior permission or instruction." Content is not human reviewed. Admins set retention from 90 days to indefinite.
Google Cloud (Gemini Enterprise, Code Assist, Agent Platform)[35]Prompts and responses are not used to train Google models. On Agent Platform, Google may log prompts for abuse monitoring; you can request an exception to reach zero data retention.

Europe: GDPR, data residency and the AI Act

DPA / GDPR terms[36]The Cloud Data Processing Addendum covers Google Workspace and Google Cloud and refers to the GDPR and the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. Gemini in Workspace falls under it. Google publishes a DPIA support guide for Workspace with Gemini.
Workspace data regions[37]Gemini in Workspace apps follows EU or US data regions since June 2025 (Enterprise Plus, Assured Controls). The Gemini app follows them since 29 June 2026: storage and processing on Enterprise Plus and Frontline Plus, storage only on Education Standard and Plus. Data region settings "do not apply to data in Gemini Notebook".
EU endpoint on Google Cloud[38]On Agent Platform, the eu multi-region endpoint keeps model processing inside EU member states; the UK and Switzerland are excluded. The global endpoint gives no data residency guarantee.
Gemini Enterprise and Gemini Notebook Enterprise[39]Gemini Enterprise Standard and Plus offer data residency, and Gemini 3.8 Flash is GA in its EU region since 23 Sep 2026. Gemini Notebook Enterprise stores data in your project in the US or EU multi-region.
AI Act[40]Google has signed the EU General-Purpose AI Code of Practice and is on the Commission's list of signatories.

Hybrid: the same models in your own account

The same Gemini models also run in your own Google Cloud project, in a region you choose and under your own IAM. For full control there are open Gemma models and Gemini on premises.

Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI)[41]Call Gemini by model ID in your own project. Gemini 3.8 Flash runs with processing in the us or eu multi-region, with CMEK and VPC Service Controls.
Other vendors in the same project[42]Agent Platform also offers partner models such as Anthropic Claude, Grok and Mistral AI, and open models such as DeepSeek, Llama and Qwen.
Antigravity through your Cloud project[31]Antigravity 2.0, the CLI and IDE extensions can run on models in your Google Cloud project or Gemini Enterprise licence. Limits: no bring-your-own-key, and the standalone Antigravity IDE is not supported for enterprise use.
Local models in the Antigravity SDK[43]The SDK runs agents without an API key or internet connection, on Gemma 4 through LiteRT or against Ollama, LM Studio or vLLM.
Gemma 4 open weights[44]Apache 2.0, downloadable from Kaggle and Hugging Face. Gemma is a separate, smaller family, not a self-hosted Gemini.
Gemini on Google Distributed Cloud[45]Gemini in your own data centre: GA for air-gapped sites since August 2025, latest Flash models in preview for connected sites since April 2026.
